I have wandered the wilderness for as long as memory serves. It is a place of great mystery and wonderment. This Blog will help me to share some of the many lessons I have learned while wandering and paddling the forests and lakes I call home.

Bitter Cold and This Little Sled Still Goes

The temperature outside was - 25 degrees Celsius as I trudged toward my little 256cc sled.

I needed to pack in the trails for future firewood gathering but I was unsure if the little Bravo would fire up.

One pull on the cord and the little Yamaha started. The game was on and away we went to pack in the trails and collect a few pieces of firewood I had previously cut.

It's amazing how fast the wildlife catch onto the trails and use them to their advantage. Instead of pushing through deep snow, they can traverse the land and conserve energy.

In the coming days, my little Bravo will be put to heavy work hauling out the cord wood needed to keep the homestead warm.

Stay Warm and Happy Trails.

Reflections on Summer Past

This is a very short video where I practiced with some editing techniques.

I didn't realize it was to become an ode to summer past.

With the canoe stored away and the paddles hung in the barn, it's time to embrace winter because; the more you like it, the faster it goes.

Happy Wanders.

Upside Down Hobo Stove | Will it Work?

Hobo Stoves, or Stick Stoves, are easy to make and work perfect for cooking food in the woods.

I had an idea that if I turned one upside down, it would trap heat from my forest woodstove and keep food or water warm.

The prototype worked but does require modifications to be useful in the field.

This video shows the making and testing of the prototype.

An Early Winter Hike in Algonquin Highlands

Algonquin Highlands hiking trails are a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts.

The trail highlighted in this video is dubbed the "Circuit of 5 Viewpoints".

It is a 5 to 6 KM trek and categorized as moderate and takes approximately 3 hours to cover.

The viewpoints are situated along the trail at vantage points which overlook the rolling hills of Algonquin Highlands.

Cold Weather Camp Gear - The Basics

Cold weather camping adds a whole new layer to what you need to have in your pack.

Hypothermia can creep up on you with very little warning, and it can be deadly.

Being prepared is key to the enjoyment of camping when temperatures plunge below zero.

This video shows the bare essentials I bring along if I am planning to spend a night or two in the woods.

Happy Camping!
